The S.P.I.R.E. (Storm Penetrating Instrument Research Experiment) ground probe is an exploratory system for the purpose of gathering atmospheric data from inside a tornado at surface level. S.P.I.R.E. is a rapid deployment sensor station with a dense, minimized cross-sectional form factor. Barometric pressure, relative humidity, temperature, and wind-speed are sampled every 0.5s through a powerful STM32F205 120Mhz ARM Cortex M3 microprocessor. Depending on atmospheric conditions, S.P.I.R.E. is capable of recording data (cloud stored if Wi-Fi is available) for up to 20 hours through a 2Ah rechargeable Lithium Ion battery. The mission is to deploy S.P.I.R.E. in conjunction with a UAV delivered sensor package in order to interpolate surface level data and data a loft within the same tornado.
